Art has a way of changing how we see the places and people around us. At Andaz Bali, this belief is reflected in an ongoing commitment to creating space for local artists to share their perspectives, experiment with new ideas and connect with a wider audience. Through Artfully Andaz, the resort introduces a new collaboration with Balinese artist Ngakan Putu Agus Arta Wijaya, known as NPAAW, beginning with Rekindling, an exhibition that explores creativity, transformation and our relationship with the natural world.

Getting to Know NPAAW
A graduate of Fine Art Painting at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar, NPAAW is known for combining surrealism, abstraction and spatial illusion. His artistic practice has developed through years of experimentation with different techniques, exploring how colour, form and carefully constructed patterns can influence the way people perceive a work of art.

In his recent works, NPAAW explores the concept of “space on space”, using masking tape, spray paint and a meticulous grid system to create optical tension and a sense of multidimensional depth. Beyond their visual precision, his works reflect his personal response to the world, drawing connections between perception, emotion and social dynamics. With Rekindling, he continues to push these explorations beyond the canvas, opening up new ways to work with form, materials and meaning.

From Geometric Patterns to New Possibilities
NPAAW’s earlier works often featured square patterns created through masking tape and spray paint, building layered surfaces through colour, texture and carefully defined shapes. While these patterns remain central to his visual language, Rekindling explores how the same techniques and materials can take on new forms and meanings.

For NPAAW, this shift opens up possibilities beyond two-dimensional painting. Stripped plaster surfaces introduce physical depth, with lines extending diagonally across the works and forming circular compositions inspired by mandalas. Traditionally associated with the cosmos and the interconnectedness of existence in Hindu and Buddhist traditions, the mandala becomes a point of departure for NPAAW’s colourful interpretations. Through layers of sprayed colour, these works invite viewers to consider the relationship between individual experience and the larger universe.

This spirit of exploration continues through sculptural works inspired by marine life, particularly coral. Situated along the shores of Sanur, the exhibition draws a connection between the artist’s material explorations and the living environment around the resort. By reusing and reimagining materials from his own artistic process, NPAAW brings sustainability into the work while drawing attention to marine life that can easily go unnoticed by those living on land.

The Meaning Behind Rekindling
Written by independent curator and art lecturer Savitri Sastrawan, the exhibition’s curatorial perspective considers Rekindling as both an artistic process and an invitation to reconnect. The mandala-inspired works and coral forms bring together ideas of renewal, interdependence and care, encouraging viewers to look beyond familiar boundaries and reflect on the ways all living beings share the same world.

The exhibition also reflects NPAAW’s willingness to revisit his own practice. Materials once used to create patterns are given new possibilities, while familiar geometric forms move into sculptural dimensions. Through these transformations, Rekindling asks audiences to remain curious about what lies beyond what they can immediately see, from the complexities of the universe to the life beneath the ocean’s surface.

At Andaz Bali, these ideas find a natural connection with the resort’s approach to celebrating local culture and creativity. Inspired by the character of a traditional Balinese village, the resort brings people together through shared experiences, meaningful encounters and a sense of discovery. Artfully Andaz extends this approach into the arts, creating opportunities for artists to express their ideas and for guests to engage with Bali’s creative community in a more personal way.

Experience Artfully Andaz
The launch of Artfully Andaz: Rekindling took place on 20 October 2026 at Village Square, Andaz Bali, bringing together media friends, students from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar, a higher education institution specialising in the arts, and in-house hotel guests. The event featured a live painting session, interactive installations and opportunities for guest participation, offering attendees a closer look at NPAAW’s artistic process and the ideas behind the exhibition.

Through this collaboration, Andaz Bali continues its commitment to supporting local creative voices and providing a platform for artists to share their work with a wider audience. With Rekindling, NPAAW invites viewers to see familiar materials in new ways and reflect on our connection with the natural world. Following the launch, his artworks will remain on display at Andaz Bali through January 2027, welcoming all art enthusiasts to explore the collection and discover the stories behind the works.
