MRT Jakarta Now Accepts Contactless Credit Card Payments

Passengers on MRT Jakarta can now pay for their journeys using EMV contactless credit cards, eliminating the need to top up electronic money before travelling. The new payment system is the first of its kind on Indonesia's public transportation network and is expected to make commuting more convenient while supporting Jakarta's ambition to become a global city.

President Director of PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda), Tuhiyat, said the introduction of EMV-based digital payments is part of the company's efforts to improve transport accessibility and strengthen Jakarta's competitiveness.

"This EMV-based digital payment method is part of MRT Jakarta's commitment to creating a more inclusive payment system for all passengers, including international visitors who are already familiar with EMV transactions," Tuhiyat said in a written statement.

With the new system, passengers simply tap in and tap out using an EMV-enabled credit card, removing the need for prepaid e-money balances.

The initiative is a collaboration between the Jakarta Provincial Government, Bank Indonesia, Bank Mandiri, PT Mitra Transaksi Indonesia (MTI/YOKKE), Mastercard, Visa, and MRT Jakarta.

Sylvia Novieta, CEO of PT Mitra Transaksi Indonesia (MTI), said the rollout supports Jakarta's development as a globally connected city with an internationally compatible payment ecosystem.

"As a payment service provider, MTI remains committed to supporting Jakarta's sustainable development as a global city. This EMV Contactless service reflects our commitment to providing secure and innovative payment solutions that make travel easier for both residents and international visitors," she said.

All Mastercard and Visa credit cards equipped with contactless functionality can now be used across the entire MRT Jakarta network.

MRT Jakarta believes the new payment option will be particularly beneficial for international tourists, who are already accustomed to using EMV contactless payments in their home countries.

With the launch of EMV Contactless, Jakarta joins more than 150 cities worldwide—including Singapore, Tokyo, Shanghai, Sydney, and New York—that already support contactless fare payments on public transport.

How to use contactless payments on MRT Jakarta

Using the new system is straightforward. Here's how:

- Use a Mastercard or Visa credit card with the contactless symbol.
- Tap the card at the contactless reader when entering the station.
- Tap the same card again at the exit gate when leaving your destination station.
- The fare will be calculated and charged automatically.
