Novus Jiva Anyer Presents Selingkung

A Monumental Art Installation Woven from Inclusion and Sustainability

Along the coastline of Anyer, a monumental textile narrative is taking shape. From 21 May to 31 July 2026, Novus Jiva Anyer presents Selingkung, a large-scale public art installation created in collaboration with Indonesian contemporary artist Agnes Hansella and disability empowerment foundation Precious One.

Part of the resort's ongoing campaign, The Way Forward, Knot by Knot, the installation transforms reclaimed batik scraps into an immersive spatial experience that invites visitors to reflect on sustainability, inclusion, and the collective power of small actions.

At first glance, a discarded piece of fabric may appear to have little value. Yet through Selingkung, hundreds of reclaimed batik fragments are carefully gathered, tied, and transformed into a monumental structure that tells a larger story about human potential and shared progress.

The installation draws inspiration from the "lucky knot," one of the oldest knotting traditions found across cultures and a symbol of prosperity, unity, and continuity. Working alongside artisans with disabilities from Precious One, Agnes Hansella developed hundreds of individually crafted knots that collectively form the exhibition's immersive environment. The repetitive act of knotting becomes both a creative process and a metaphor for how meaningful change is often built through patience, persistence, and collaboration.

For Hansella, Selingkung marks a new chapter in her artistic practice. Known for her exploration of macramé, materiality, and spatial storytelling, this is the first time she has incorporated reclaimed batik textiles into her work. The resulting installation bridges contemporary artistic expression with cultural memory, giving new life to heritage materials while highlighting the possibilities of sustainable creation.

The collaboration also shines a light on the work of Precious One, a disability empowerment foundation established in 2004 by Ratnawati Sutedjo. For more than two decades, the organization has focused on creating opportunities through education, vocational training, craft production, and employment support. Rather than viewing disability through the lens of limitation, Precious One champions capability, independence, and meaningful participation in society.

More than a static exhibition, Selingkung is designed as a participatory experience. Visitors are invited to contribute their own knot to the evolving installation or take home a handmade knot as a keepsake. At the conclusion of the exhibition, the installation itself will be dismantled and shared with visitors, allowing its materials and message to continue beyond the gallery space.

Guests can also support Precious One through donations and craft purchases, helping sustain the foundation's ongoing initiatives in disability empowerment, education, and sustainability.

Through Selingkung, Novus Jiva Anyer continues its commitment to creating cultural experiences that connect hospitality, art, community, and social impact. The installation serves as a reminder that progress is rarely achieved through grand gestures alone—it is often built knot by knot, through small acts carried forward together.
