What is Butter Tteok?

Made with glutinous rice flour, it has that familiar chewy texture you’d expect from mochi. It’s often compared to Hawaiian butter mochi, but there are a few key differences. Most notably, butter tteok isn’t made with coconut milk and typically has a lightly crisp, almost crunchy exterior.
Despite its name, which translates to “butter rice cake,” the dessert feels more like a cross between mochi, butter cake, and even a canelé. Crisp on the outside and soft, chewy, and rich on the inside, it’s easy to see why so many people are hooked.
