Nusa Penida plans to become a "Green Island" with clean energy, EV mobility, and sustainable tourism under a new initiative by Klungkung Regency.

Nusa Penida is one of Bali’s fastest-growing tourist destinations. Just a short boat ride from Bali, the island is home to some of the province’s most iconic landscapes, including Kelingking Beach.

With tourism continuing to grow, local leaders are now working to transform the island into a sustainable destination through a new “Green Island” concept. The initiative is being developed by the Klungkung Regency Government in collaboration with Indonesian government.

With tourism continuing to grow in Nusa Penida, government are now working to transform the island into a sustainable destination through a new “Green Island” concept.

Officials believe the island still retains the feeling of a “hidden paradise,” making this the right moment to guide its tourism growth through sustainable and environmentally responsible practices.

The Green Island concept is spearheaded by Bupati I Made Satria, who aims to implement a comprehensive approach to sustainable development across the entire island.

The strategy includes improvements in waste management, renewable energy development, vehicle restrictions, cultural preservation, and responsible tourism practices. Authorities are also ensuring that the concept is aligned with official spatial planning documents, including regional development plans.

According to Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Bima Arya Sugiarto, strong coordination between government departments will be key to ensuring the program’s success. He also emphasized that social development and community engagement must accompany infrastructure improvements to ensure long-term sustainability.

Electric Mobility and Pilot Programs

As part of the initiative, the government is collaborating with PT Indonesia Korea (INAKO) to develop a clean energy ecosystem on the island. The project aims to transform Nusa Penida into a destination powered entirely by clean energy.

According to INAKO representative Riniwaty Sinaga, the island is well suited for electrification due to its controlled geography and limited port access. The mobility pattern of tourists, which largely relies on rental vehicles, also makes the island an ideal testing ground for an electric vehicle ecosystem.

Field trials have shown that electric vehicles can handle the island’s steep terrain while offering significant energy cost savings. Simple charging systems also make them practical for use in island destinations.

INAKO recommends introducing the transition gradually through a cluster-based rollout rather than immediate mass conversion. The next phase will involve a flagship pilot program to test the electric mobility ecosystem on a limited scale before expanding it across the island.

Regent I Made Satria welcomed the initiative, noting that environmentally friendly tourism will strengthen Nusa Penida’s global reputation and competitiveness. The Klungkung Regency Government plans to launch a pilot project in 2026, positioning Nusa Penida as a pioneer of clean-energy tourism in Bali.

Through collaboration between government, private partners, and local communities, the Green Island program is expected to support sustainable tourism growth while creating real economic benefits for residents and protecting the island’s natural environment.
