In celebration of World Environment Day 2026 on 5 June 2026, Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve welcomed students from five universities across Bali for a hands-on foraging experience designed to reconnect the younger generation with nature and deepen their understanding of environmental stewardship.

 

Guided by Executive Sous Chef Eka Sunarya, participants explored the natural surroundings of Buahan, Payangan in Gianyar learning to identify edible plants, herbs, and native ingredients while discovering how local ecosystems support both biodiversity and community well-being. The experience highlighted the importance of protecting green spaces and preserving traditional knowledge that has long connected Balinese communities to the land.

 

 

Held in line with this year’s World Environment Day theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” the program encouraged students to see sustainability not as a distant concept, but as a daily practice rooted in awareness, responsibility, and respect for the environment.

 

“Foraging is more than finding ingredients,” said Chef Eka Sunarya, Executive Sous Chef, “It teaches us to observe nature closely, understand seasonality, and appreciate the value of what grows around us. Through this experience, we hope students gain a deeper connection with the environment and become advocates for its protection.”

 

The initiative forms part of Mandapa’s ongoing commitment to environmental conservation and community engagement through its sustainability and Community Footprints programs. Beyond learning about local flora, students were encouraged to reflect on the role they can play in safeguarding natural resources for future generations.

 

 

“Gen Z is one of the most influential generations shaping the future of sustainability. Through the World Environment Day, we would like to create an opportunity to inspire action through meaningful experiences,” said Niluh Purwiasih, Community Footprints Champion at Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve. “By bringing university students directly into nature, we hope to spark curiosity, encourage responsible choices, and demonstrate that protecting the environment begins with understanding and appreciating it.”

 

Following the foraging journey, participants gathered to discuss their discoveries and learn how locally sourced ingredients can support more sustainable food systems. The program also provided a platform for students from different campuses to exchange ideas on environmental responsibility and climate awareness.

 

 

Back at Mandapa, students were introduced to the resort’s sustainability practices, including responsible sourcing, waste reduction initiatives, and the use of locally grown ingredients that support surrounding communities. The experience concluded with a tasting of Buah Boni wine, crafted by Chef Eka and his team using locally sourced ingredients.
