Viceroy Bali has retained its MICHELIN Key for 2026, marking the second consecutive year the property has received the distinction from the MICHELIN Guide. The recognition follows the MICHELIN Guide’s 2026 Key selection, which features 47 hotels across Indonesia, compared with 33 in the inaugural 2025 selection. Viceroy Bali remains among the Indonesian properties recognised in the MICHELIN Key selection, highlighting its distinctive setting, warm hospitality, character and connection with its surroundings.

The MICHELIN Key selection considers hotels through five universal criteria: excellence in architecture and interior design; quality and consistency of service, comfort and maintenance; consistency between the experience and price; individuality reflecting personality and authenticity; and the hotel’s role as an open door to its destination.
A Boutique Retreat Above the Valley

Perched on a ridge above the Petanu gorge, Viceroy Bali overlooks the Valley of the Kings in Ubud. Its 40 private pool villas are positioned along the hillside, each featuring a private heated pool and views of the surrounding landscape.
The setting is an integral part of the experience. Private land across the gorge helps preserve the open valley views, while the surrounding villages remain closely connected to the property and its sense of place.
Independently operated since its opening in 2005, Viceroy Bali maintains strong ties with the local community. Approximately 37% of its team members come from the nearby village of Petulu, while local craftsmen continue to contribute to the maintenance of the property’s traditional alang-alang roofs.
Rather than simply providing a backdrop, the valley and its communities form an important part of the character of this boutique retreat in Ubud.
Dining Above the Valley

Viceroy Bali’s culinary experiences further reflect its connection to Indonesia, with three distinct venues offering different perspectives on the landscape and local flavours.
At Apéritif Restaurant, the philosophy “European Technique. Indonesian Soul.” brings Indonesian ingredients and flavours together with European culinary techniques. Its Guided by the Moon tasting menu is available in five- and seven-course formats, with vegetarian and vegan options.
At CasCades Restaurant & Bar, Indonesian flavours are presented alongside panoramic views of the Valley of the Kings. The Royal Balinese Rijsttafel features nine traditional dishes, while Monday evenings are accompanied by a Balinese Dance Performance.
For a more intimate evening, Pinstripe Bar draws inspiration from the 1930s, with marble, dark wood and bronze details overlooking the valley. Guests can enjoy cocktails, wines and live jazz as the sun sets over Ubud.
Sustainability With Independent Verification
Viceroy Bali’s 2026 MICHELIN Key recognition follows another significant milestone in its sustainability journey.
In June 2026, the property became one of the first hotels in Ubud to achieve GSTC Certification, following an assessment by Control Union, a GSTC-accredited certification body.
The certification covers four areas of sustainable tourism: sustainable management, socioeconomic impacts, cultural impacts and environmental impacts. At Viceroy Bali, these efforts include an 80-metre mountain spring supplying drinking water, an 18-step organic wastewater treatment system, solar energy, an organic kitchen garden and a policy eliminating single-use plastic bottles.
The property’s sustainability approach also extends to its people, with approximately 37% of team members coming from Petulu, strengthening the connection between environmental responsibility and the surrounding community.
Two Consecutive Years of MICHELIN Key Recognition

Retaining its MICHELIN Key places Viceroy Bali among the Indonesian hotels recognised in both of the MICHELIN Guide’s first two Key selections.
For Viceroy Bali, the recognition reflects the elements that have shaped the property since its opening: a distinctive hillside setting above the Petanu gorge, 40 private pool villas, culinary experiences rooted in Indonesian ingredients and traditions, longstanding connections with the local community, and independently verified sustainability practices.
Just a short drive from central Ubud, Viceroy Bali remains closely connected to the valley that surrounds it, with the landscape continuing to shape the experience from morning through evening.
