Bumi Kinar Ubud and Bottlesmoker Turn Plant Life Into a Meditative Sound Experience

Hidden among the lush landscapes and quiet rhythms of Ubud, Bumi Kinar Ubud continues to position itself as more than just a wellness retreat. The nature-focused destination has now teamed up with Indonesian electronic duo Bottlesmoker for an immersive audio experience that blends plants, technology, and meditative soundscapes into one deeply atmospheric journey.

Set within the open-air surroundings of Tukad Teras — overlooking Ubud’s green valleys and layered tropical scenery — the collaboration invites guests into a multisensory encounter where music becomes part of the landscape itself. The result feels somewhere between an ambient listening session, a contemporary art installation, and a quiet moment of reflection in nature.

For more than two decades, Bottlesmoker has remained one of Indonesia’s most respected experimental electronic acts. Formed in Bandung in 2005 by Anggung “Angkuy” Suherman and Ryan “Nobie” Adzani, the duo first gained attention during the MySpace era through their dreamy indietronic and downtempo compositions built using modified vintage toys, old gaming consoles, transistor radios, and handmade analog machines.

Over the years, their sound evolved into something more layered and introspective, weaving together techno pulses, minimalist textures, and tribal rhythms inspired by Indonesia’s indigenous traditions and spiritual philosophies. Projects like Parakosmos explored ritual and spirituality within local communities, while Sasi reflected ideas surrounding ecological balance and environmental regeneration.

At Bumi Kinar Ubud, Bottlesmoker introduces “Bio-Plant Sonic”, an interactive sonic experiment where living plants actively shape electronic music in real time. Inspired by early electronic experiments like Mort Garson’s Plantasia, the project transforms plants into biological instruments connected directly to synthesizers and digital sound systems.

Using biofeedback technology and biological sensors attached to leaves, stems, flowers, and moist soil, the system captures the plants’ natural electrical fluctuations — subtle responses influenced by humidity, light, temperature, and even human touch. These signals are then translated into MIDI data, generating evolving layers of rhythm, melody, tempo, and sonic textures.

The experience becomes especially fascinating when human interaction enters the equation. A simple touch on a leaf can alter the electrical circuit and instantly reshape the sound being produced, creating an organic dialogue between people, plants, and machines. No composition is ever repeated in exactly the same way.

Alongside the installation, Bottlesmoker also designed a meditative “Plants Soundbath” session, layering the plants’ generative melodies with ambient natural soundscapes. Gentle rain textures, distant birdsong, and soft atmospheric tones drift through the Tukad Teras surroundings, creating a calming environment that feels both grounding and immersive.

The collaboration reflects a growing conversation around mindfulness, sustainability, and humanity’s evolving relationship with technology and nature. At Bumi Kinar Ubud, music is no longer treated purely as entertainment, but as a medium for reflection, stillness, and deeper connection with the environment.

For travellers seeking a slower and more contemplative side of Ubud, this is the kind of experience that lingers long after the sound fades.
