Bali’s main gateway has rolled out a major upgrade to its baggage screening process, promising faster, smoother, and more convenient journeys for travelers heading to and from the island. Goodbye to Double Scans at the Entrance
Previously, all passengers had to place both checked luggage and hand-carry items through X-ray scanners immediately upon entering the terminal building. This meant an extra layer of waiting before even reaching the airline check-in counters, often leading to long lines during peak hours. With the new approach, the process has been completely restructured to save time without compromising security.
Checked baggage is now screened at the check-in counter itself, using state-of-the-art Multi-View Dual-Energy X-ray machines at a dedicated Hold Baggage Screening area. This advanced technology offers more precise detection of prohibited and dangerous items, ensuring a higher level of safety while accelerating the flow of passengers through the terminal. Once the checked bags are processed, travelers proceed directly to security, where only their carry-on luggage is scanned before entering the departure lounge.
Reducing Touchpoints for a Seamless Journey
This change eliminates the need for double inspections and reduces touchpoints, which in turn cuts down waiting times considerably. For holidaymakers and business travelers alike, the result is a far more seamless journey from curb to gate. The new layout mirrors systems already in place at many modern international airports, aligning Bali’s facilities with global best practices in airport security and passenger experience.
The timing could not be better. Bali Airport handles an average of 31,000 passengers a day, with numbers soaring to over 60,000 during peak holiday periods and major religious festivals. Any improvement to the flow of passengers has a direct impact on the comfort and efficiency of everyone passing through. By removing the initial bottleneck at the entrance, travelers can now expect shorter lines, less congestion in public areas, and a calmer start to their trip.

Beyond just speed, the system is designed with safety and convenience in mind. Passengers no longer need to manage both large suitcases and hand luggage at the same time during the first security scan. The new screening arrangement is also part of a broader push to make Bali Airport more accessible and inclusive. Recent upgrades include wheelchair services, priority seating, accessible restrooms, a dedicated counter for passengers with special needs, and designated pick-up and drop-off points. These measures, combined with the restructured baggage process, reflect a commitment to ensuring that every visitor can move through the airport with ease.
