This profound contemplation hovered over the Grand Ballroom of The Langham Jakarta on August 13, 2026, as acclaimed Indonesian fashion designer Yosafat Dwi Kurniawan presented his highly anticipated Spring/Summer 2027 collection, “Après La Révolution” (After the Revolution), created in partnership with the Indonesia Fashion Designer Council (IFDC) at the Langham Fashion Soirée.
Known across the region for his deep passion for fashion history and structural precision, Yosafat, affectionately known as Yos, turned his lens away from mere grandiosity to explore the human psyche in the wake of historical turmoil. The phrase “Après La Révolution” historically captures the social and stylistic metamorphosis of post-revolutionary France, the delicate transition from royal absolutism to the Directoire era and Napoleon’s empire. As aristocrats feared being labeled bourgeois after the fall of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, they shed ostentatious court wear in favor of light, unpretentious, Hellenic-inspired attire symbolic of ancient Athenian democracy.
Yet Yosafat’s historical curiosity extended beyond 18th-century Europe. He recognized a recurring human rhythm across eras and geographies: the same sartorial liberation echoed in 1970s America following the Vietnam War, where garments yielded to fluid practicality, ease, and uninhibited freedom. Social revolution, as Yosafat eloquently demonstrates, invariably resonates through the way we dress.
“For me, this is a revolution,” Yosafat reflected during an intimate backstage conversation regarding his design thesis. “Evolution is slow; this is a revolution. I had to adapt and change quickly.”
A Dramatic Metamorphosis: From Structural Armor to Fluid Freedom
For a designer celebrated over fifteen years for razor-sharp waistlines and architectural tailoring, “Après La Révolution” represents a bold artistic paradigm shift. Abandoning rigid structures, Yosafat introduced sweeping, languid silhouettes that float effortlessly around the female form. The collection balances inherent strength with liberating fluidity, crafting an aesthetic that feels both protective and intrinsically unconstrained.
Rather than drawing inspiration from conventional fashion media or European haute couture archives, Yosafat approached this seasonal showcase through raw empathy and poetic romanticism. “It’s not just visually compelling; it is deeply romantic and melancholic,” Yos explained, describing how he channeled the quiet emotional resilience of post-war recovery.
The runway narrative unfolded across 30 meticulously crafted looks, guiding guests on a chronological visual journey:
Act I: Imperial Baroque-Rococo: Richly textured silhouettes referencing courtly grandeur and pre-revolutionary opulence.
Act II: The Battlefield Shift: Metallic silver garments evocative of chainmail armor and wartime resilience.
Act III: Post-War Liberation: Soft drapery and minimalist 1970s euphoria embracing peace, movement, and unscripted elegance.
Subtle Palettes and High-Tech Textile Artistry
In a departure from his signature vivid, high-contrast colorways, Yosafat embraced a muted, faded palette that mirrors historical memory. Shades of off-white, cream, turquoise, sage green, denim blue, soft red, charcoal black, oxidized silver, and faded gold imparted a delicate, time-worn elegance to the runway.
Technologically, the collection broke new ground. Eliminating heavy traditional sequin embellishments, Yosafat partnered with NOMATEX to utilize state-of-the-art embroidery machine technology coupled with precision laser cutting. This technique achieves intricate, seamless textural depth on wide-width textiles in a fraction of the time, guaranteeing lightweight wearability without sacrificing couture detail. Each ensemble was complemented by sculptural custom accessories from NOMA.
Material choices further reinforced the post-war narrative. Just as historical elites sought subtle avenues to showcase luxury without overt display, Yosafat curated tactile, fluid fabrics—integrating jersey, featherlight voile, and structured tweed alongside eco-conscious viscose rayon and lyocell from Asia Pacific Rayon (APR).
“Through our collaboration with Yosafat, we demonstrate how viscose rayon and lyocell fibers can elevate creative expression within the luxury fashion sector,” stated Aryo Oetomo, Director of Asia Pacific Rayon, highlighting APR’s mission to expand the use of natural, sustainable fibers across global premium retail networks.
Yosafat noted that these sustainable natural fibers were essential in achieving the collection's complex drapery and delicate tailoring while ensuring everyday comfort for modern luxury prêt-à-porter.
An Uncertain World and the Future of Design

For Yosafat, the decision mirrors broader global anxieties and personal reflection. “Because change is happening—not only within myself, but across the world,” he shared candidly. Amid contemporary sociopolitical shifts and human struggles, Yos admits to feeling heightened awareness, vulnerability, and a drive to critically evaluate the future.
When asked whether this new fluid silhouette will permanently replace his iconic structured tailoring, Yosafat maintained a pragmatic perspective: “It depends on the market response.” Beyond its thematic depth, the presentation served as an exclusive preview into Yosafat’s upcoming ready-to-wear expansion slated for next year.
As an esteemed academic and fashion educator, Yosafat’s journey offers a poignant masterclass for the next generation of Indonesian creatives.
“After 15 years, I can still find fascinating stories to bring to life,” Yosafat concluded. “Even if you have established a signature design line that everyone recognizes, never be afraid to explore.
